The short answer

Help Scout charges per user ($25, $45 or $75 a month on annual billing, about $30, $54 and $90 monthly) and adds $0.75 for every conversation its AI Answers resolves on its own. A 3-person team that lets AI close 150 chats a month pays about $188; InChat Starter covers the same chat volume for $24 a month billed yearly, with human handoff included. If your support runs mostly on email with a big Docs site and a customer portal, Help Scout is still the better fit; if the growth is in website chat and repeat questions, a flat-price AI chatbot costs a fraction.

Compare

What Help Scout and InChat cost at three team sizes

Each setup assumes Help Scout on annual billing with AI Answers turned on after the 3-month trial, and the AI resolving about 40 percent of chat conversations. InChat is priced on its yearly plans. On monthly billing InChat plans are $49, $149 and $499, and Help Scout seats run about $30, $54 and $90.

Team size Help Scout (annual billing) InChat (yearly billing) What changes
3 agents, 400 chats a month, AI resolves 150 Standard 3 x $25 = $75 + 150 resolutions x $0.75 = $112.50, about $188 Starter $24 for 500 AI conversations, 3 team members, human handoff About $164 a month less, and the bill stays the same in a busy month
8 agents, 1,500 conversations, AI resolves 600 Standard 8 x $25 = $200 + 600 x $0.75 = $450, about $650 (Plus for HubSpot or Salesforce: $810) Plus $74 for 2,000 AI conversations, 10 team members, email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram inbox, help center portal About $576 a month less on Standard, $736 on Plus
20 agents, 5,000 conversations, AI resolves 2,000 Plus 20 x $45 = $900 + 2,000 x $0.75 = $1,500, about $2,400 Pro $249 for unlimited AI conversations and unlimited team members One fixed line instead of one that grows with every hire and every answered question

Help Scout prices checked on helpscout.com/pricing in October 2026: Free $0 (5 users, 1 inbox, 100 contacts a month), Standard $25 per user a month (up to 25 users, 2 inboxes), Plus $45 (up to 50 users, 5 inboxes), Pro $75 (minimum 10 users, 10 inboxes), annual prices with a 16 percent discount over monthly. AI Answers $0.75 per resolution on any plan, free for the first 3 months; a resolution is a conversation the AI closes without the customer asking for more help, counted once per conversation. Extra inboxes $10 a month, extra Docs sites $20 a month on annual billing.

Questions before you upgrade?

AI answers from this site, a person when you need one

Does the Team plan include API access? We want to sync contacts from HubSpot.
Yes. API access is on Team and above, with 10,000 requests a day. There is a ready HubSpot sync under Integrations, so you may not need the API at all. Source: API reference.
OK. We were double charged last month though, can someone look?

Why teams switch

What you keep, and what gets cheaper, when chat moves off Help Scout

01

Answers from your own docs

InChat reads your help center, product pages and uploaded PDFs, then answers from them. Paste your Help Scout Docs URL and the articles you already wrote become the AI's source.

02

No per-resolution fee

AI conversations are part of the plan: 500 on Starter, 2,000 on Plus, unlimited on Pro. A customer who asks four follow-ups is one conversation and costs nothing extra.

03

Team pricing, not seat pricing

Starter includes 3 team members, Plus 10 and Pro unlimited. Adding your fourth support hire does not add $25 to $75 to the invoice.

04

Human handoff built in

When a question needs a person, the agent collects the email and context and routes the chat to your team with the transcript, during your hours or by email after.

05

Shared inbox and email on Plus

Website chat, email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram land in one inbox, with assignment and internal notes, so the team works one queue.

06

Proactive prompts

Open the chat when a visitor lingers on pricing, scrolls through a setup guide or moves to leave. Trigger on time, scroll depth or exit intent.

How it works

Move website chat from Help Scout in an afternoon

  1. 1

    Paste your help center URL

InChat crawls your Docs site and public pages. Upload saved replies or internal guides as files if you want them in the knowledge base.

  2. 2

Test it on last month's questions

Pull the 20 most common Beacon conversations from your Help Scout reports and ask them. Fix any weak answer by editing the source article or adding a short instruction.

  3. 3

    Set handoff rules

Billing, account access and bug reports go to a person. Add your team members, their hours and who owns which topic.

  4. 4

    Swap the widget

Remove the Beacon embed and add the InChat script tag. Keep Help Scout for email if your team still lives there, or move email to the Plus inbox.

What is the best Help Scout alternative?

The best Help Scout alternative depends on which part of Help Scout you rely on. If most of your growth is in website chat and the same questions repeat, a flat-price AI chatbot like InChat is the cheaper fit, from $24 a month billed yearly with 500 AI conversations. If you need a full email help desk with complex ticketing, Zendesk, Freshdesk or Zoho Desk are the usual comparisons.

The teams that move chat to InChat tend to look alike. They are a SaaS company or a service business with 2 to 20 people in support, a Docs site that already answers most questions, and a Help Scout invoice where the seat count and the AI Answers line both grew faster than revenue. Their chats repeat: how do I export my data, does the Team plan include SSO, can I change billing to annual, why is my integration not syncing. The answers are in articles you already wrote.

If you are weighing other chat-first tools before deciding, our LiveChat alternative page compares per-agent seats plus a separate AI agent, and the Help Scout pricing breakdown totals the bill at more team sizes.

Is Help Scout AI Answers worth $0.75 per resolution?

AI Answers is worth $0.75 per resolution when it deflects conversations that would otherwise cost an agent several minutes each, and when volume stays modest. At 200 resolutions a month the line is $150. At 2,000 it is $1,500, more than most Help Scout seat bills, and it rises with every month your product grows.

Help Scout only charges when the AI closes the conversation without the customer asking for more help, and you can set a monthly spending cap. That is fair billing. The catch is the cap itself: when you hit it, AI Answers switches off for the rest of the cycle, so the busiest week of your month is exactly when customers stop getting instant answers.

InChat takes the opposite approach. AI conversations are part of the plan, so there is no cap to plan around below your plan limit and no cost spike from a launch, an outage or a seasonal rush. For a direct comparison with another per-outcome model, see what Intercom Fin costs per resolution.

Why do teams switch from Help Scout?

Teams switch from Help Scout for three reasons, usually in this order: the per-user price climbs with every hire, AI Answers adds a second meter on top, and the live chat side (Beacon) is lighter than dedicated chat tools when chat becomes the main channel.

A team of 8 on Standard pays $200 a month before AI. Move to Plus for HubSpot, Salesforce or round robin routing and the same team pays $360. Hit 10 people on Pro and the minimum is $750 a month. None of that is unreasonable for an email help desk, but when 60 percent of your volume arrives through the website widget, you are paying help desk prices for a chat problem.

Help Scout still does some things better than we do, and we would rather say so than lose your trust later. It has a mature email workflow, a polished Docs product, a secure customer portal, HIPAA compliance and SSO on higher plans, and a free plan for up to 5 users. If those are why you chose it, keep Help Scout for email and put InChat on the website.

Can I use InChat with my Help Scout Docs knowledge base?

Yes. Paste the public URL of your Help Scout Docs site and InChat reads every published article, then answers from them with a link to the source. When you edit an article in Help Scout, InChat picks up the new wording on its next crawl, so your docs stay the single source of truth.

Many teams run both for a while: Help Scout for email and Docs, InChat for website chat with AI and handoff. That split lets you drop AI Answers and any seats that existed only to cover chat, without migrating your email history on day one. If you later want one inbox, the Plus plan adds email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram plus a public help center portal of its own, which our AI chatbot pricing page lists in full.

FAQ

Help Scout alternatives, common questions

For teams whose Help Scout bill grows with website chat and AI Answers resolutions, a flat-price AI chatbot like InChat is the best alternative, from $24 a month billed yearly with 500 AI conversations and 3 team members. For a heavier email help desk, Zendesk, Freshdesk and Zoho Desk are the usual comparisons.

Help Scout's main competitors are Zendesk, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Front, Missive and Hiver for email-first support, and Intercom, LiveChat, Tidio and Crisp for chat-first support. AI-first chat tools such as InChat compete on the website chat and AI answer side.

Help Scout costs $25 per user a month on Standard, $45 on Plus and $75 on Pro with annual billing, about $30, $54 and $90 billed monthly. Pro has a 10-user minimum. AI Answers adds $0.75 per resolution after a free 3-month trial, and extra inboxes cost $10 a month.

Yes. Help Scout's Free plan covers up to 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts a month, with email, live chat and AI Assist. It works for very small teams, but most growing teams move to a paid plan once they pass 100 contacts a month.

Help Scout includes live chat through its Beacon widget on every plan, and it works well as a side channel next to email. Teams whose main channel is website chat often want stronger AI answers, proactive triggers and chat-first routing, which is where dedicated AI chatbots fit better.

Yes. Many teams keep Help Scout for email and Docs and put InChat on the website. InChat trains on your Help Scout Docs articles, answers chat with AI and hands complex conversations to your team, so you can drop AI Answers fees without migrating email history.
