For teams whose Zendesk bill grew faster than their chat
Zendesk chat alternative and Zendesk alternative for AI website chat at one flat price
InChat is an AI chatbot for your website that reads your help center, product pages and policies, answers visitors in seconds and passes anything it should not handle to your team in a shared inbox. One monthly price covers the AI, the inbox and the team, with no per-agent seat and no charge each time the bot resolves a conversation.

The short answer
Zendesk sells live chat and messaging inside its Suite plans at $55, $115 or more per agent a month on annual billing ($69 and $149 monthly), and its AI agents bill $1.50 to $2.00 for every automated resolution past a small allowance of 5 to 10 per agent. A 3-agent team whose AI resolves 150 chats a month pays about $435; InChat Starter covers the same chat volume for $24 a month billed yearly, with human handoff included. If you run phone, email ticketing and chat for a large org in one system, Zendesk is still the stronger tool; if your growth is in website chat and repeat questions, a flat-price AI chatbot costs a fraction.

What Zendesk and InChat cost at three team sizes
Each setup assumes Zendesk Suite on annual billing, the AI agent resolving about 40 percent of chat conversations, the listed allowance of automated resolutions per agent, and extra resolutions at the $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate ($1.50 if you commit to a volume up front). InChat is priced on its yearly plans; on monthly billing InChat plans are $49, $149 and $499.
| Team size | Zendesk Suite (annual billing) | InChat (yearly billing) | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 agents, 400 chats a month, AI resolves 150 | Suite Team 3 x $55 = $165, 15 resolutions included, 135 x $2.00 = $270, about $435 | Starter $24 for 500 AI conversations, 3 team members, human handoff | About $411 a month less, and a busy month costs the same |
| 8 agents, 1,500 conversations, AI resolves 600 | Suite Team 8 x $55 = $440, 40 included, 560 x $2.00 = $1,120, about $1,560 ($1,280 at the committed rate) | Plus $74 for 2,000 AI conversations, 10 team members, email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram inbox, help center portal | Roughly $1,200 to $1,490 a month less |
| 20 agents, 5,000 conversations, AI resolves 2,000 | Suite Professional 20 x $115 = $2,300, 200 included, 1,800 x $2.00 = $3,600, about $5,900 ($5,000 committed) | Pro $249 for unlimited AI conversations and unlimited team members | One fixed line instead of two meters that grow with headcount and volume |
Zendesk prices checked on zendesk.com/pricing in October 2026: Support Team $19 per agent a month annual ($25 monthly, no messaging or live chat), Suite Team $55 ($69 monthly, messaging and live chat, 5 automated resolutions per agent a month), Suite Professional $115 ($149 monthly, 10 per agent), Suite Enterprise quoted by sales. Extra automated resolutions $1.50 each on committed volume or $2.00 pay as you go. Copilot add-on $50 per agent a month billed yearly. 14-day trial. Zendesk counts a messaging resolution when its AI evaluation confirms the reply was relevant, by default 2 hours after the customer's first message.
Why teams switch
What you keep, and what stops costing extra, when chat leaves Zendesk
Answers from your own help center
InChat reads your Zendesk Guide articles, product pages and uploaded PDFs, then answers from them with a link to the source. The articles your team already wrote become the AI's knowledge.
No automated resolution fee
AI conversations are part of the plan: 500 on Starter, 2,000 on Plus, unlimited on Pro. A customer who asks five follow-ups is one conversation and adds nothing to the invoice.
Team pricing, not agent seats
Starter includes 3 team members, Plus 10 and Pro unlimited. Hiring a fourth person for chat does not add $55 to $115 a month.
Human handoff built in
When a question needs judgment, the agent collects the email and context and routes the chat to the right person with the transcript, live during your hours or by email after.
Shared inbox and other channels on Plus
Website chat, email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram arrive in one inbox with assignment and internal notes, so a small team works one queue instead of a full help desk.
Proactive prompts
Open the chat when a visitor lingers on pricing, checkout or a setup guide, or moves to leave. Trigger on time on page, scroll depth or exit intent.
How it works
Move website chat off Zendesk in an afternoon
-
1
Paste your help center URL
InChat crawls your public Zendesk Guide articles and the rest of your site. Upload macros or internal guides as files if you want them in the knowledge base.
-
2
Replay last month's chats
Export the 20 most common messaging conversations from Zendesk Explore and ask them. Fix any weak answer by editing the source article or adding a short instruction.
-
3
Set handoff rules
Refunds, account access, damaged orders and bug reports go to a person. Add team members, their hours and who owns which topic.
-
4
Swap the widget
Remove the Zendesk Web Widget snippet and add the InChat script tag. Keep Zendesk for email tickets and phone if your team relies on them, or move email to the Plus inbox.
What is the best alternative to Zendesk chat?
The best alternative to Zendesk chat depends on what you use Zendesk for. If website chat is your main support channel and most questions repeat, a flat-price AI chatbot like InChat is the cheaper fit, from $24 a month billed yearly with 500 AI conversations and human handoff. If you need phone, email ticketing, SLAs and chat in one enterprise help desk, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk and Help Scout are the closer like-for-like comparisons.
The teams that move chat to InChat look alike. They are an online store, a SaaS company or a service business with 2 to 20 people answering customers, a help center that already covers most questions, and a Zendesk invoice where agent seats and resolution charges grew faster than revenue. Their chats repeat: where is my order, does the annual plan include SSO, how do I reset my password, can I change my delivery address. The answers are already written in their help center.
If you are comparing other chat-first tools before deciding, our LiveChat alternative page prices per-agent seats plus a separate AI agent, and the Help Scout alternative covers the email-first side.
Is Zendesk Chat still available?
Zendesk Chat, the product that grew out of Zopim, is now sold as part of Zendesk Suite rather than as a standalone chat subscription. New customers get live chat and messaging through the Suite Team, Suite Professional or Suite Enterprise plans, with the Zendesk Web Widget on the website and conversations handled in Agent Workspace.
That bundling is the main reason chat-first teams look for an alternative. To add chat to your website through Zendesk you pay for the full Suite seat ($55 a month per agent at minimum on annual billing), even if your agents rarely use the ticketing, voice or help desk reporting that the seat pays for. The cheaper Support Team plan at $19 per agent does not include messaging or live chat at all.
Why is Zendesk so expensive?
Zendesk is expensive for small chat teams because it is priced per agent for a full help desk, and its AI agents add a second charge for each automated resolution. A Suite Team seat is $55 a month on annual billing, Suite Professional is $115, and every resolution past the allowance of 5 or 10 per agent costs $1.50 to $2.00.
For a 3-agent team, the allowance is only 15 resolutions a month. A website chatbot that handles 150 conversations on its own adds about $270 at the pay-as-you-go rate, more than the seats themselves. Copilot, the agent-assist add-on, is another $50 per agent a month. Voice and SMS usage are billed separately on top.
None of that is unreasonable for a large support org that runs everything through Zendesk. It becomes expensive when chat is the job and the rest of the suite sits unused. For another example of outcome-based AI pricing, see what Intercom Fin costs per resolution, and for the full Zendesk math our Zendesk chat pricing breakdown totals four team sizes.
Can I use InChat with my Zendesk help center?
Yes. Paste the public URL of your Zendesk Guide help center and InChat reads every published article, then answers from them with a link to the source. When your team edits an article in Zendesk, InChat picks up the new wording on its next crawl, so the help center stays your single source of truth.
Many teams run both for a while: Zendesk for email tickets, phone and internal workflows, InChat for website chat with AI and handoff. That split lets you drop Suite seats that existed only to staff chat, and stop paying per automated resolution, without migrating ticket history on day one. If you later want one inbox for chat, email and social messaging, the Plus plan includes it, along with a public help center portal. Every plan is listed on our AI chatbot pricing page.
When Zendesk is the better choice
We would rather tell you this now than lose your trust later. Zendesk is the better choice if you need a full omnichannel help desk with phone support through Zendesk Talk, complex ticket routing and SLAs across many teams, multiple brands in one account, a large app marketplace, or enterprise security and compliance reviews that expect an established vendor. Its reporting in Explore is deeper than ours, and its Agent Workspace is built for large teams working hundreds of tickets a day.
InChat is built for a narrower job: answer website chat accurately from your own content, hand the rest to a small team, and keep the price flat. If that is most of your support volume, you are paying help desk prices for a chat problem.
Two meters on one invoice
The Zendesk bill most chat teams bring to us has two lines that move on their own: agent seats that rise with every hire, and automated resolutions that rise with every month of traffic. InChat replaces both with one plan price, so the number you budget in January is the number you pay in November, during the holiday rush or after a product launch.
Who it is for
Teams that replace Zendesk chat with InChat
Online stores
Shipping times, returns, sizing and order status make up most chats. The agent answers from your policies and product pages and sends damaged orders and refund requests to a person.
B2B SaaS support
Plan limits, integrations, SSO and billing-cycle questions repeat every day. Answers come from your docs and pricing page, and bug reports go to the on-call engineer.
Service businesses and agencies
Prospects ask about scope, turnaround and price outside office hours. The agent answers from your service pages and passes qualified leads to your team for a call.

Zendesk chat is included in Suite plans: Suite Team is $55 per agent a month on annual billing ($69 monthly) and Suite Professional is $115 ($149 monthly). AI agents include 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent a month, then $1.50 to $2.00 each. Suite Enterprise is quoted by sales.
No. Zendesk has no free plan for chat or the help desk. It offers a 14-day free trial of its plans, after which the cheapest plan with messaging and live chat is Suite Team at $55 per agent a month on annual billing.
For a small business whose support is mostly website chat, InChat is a cheaper alternative: Starter is $24 a month billed yearly with 500 AI conversations and 3 team members, and Plus is $74 with 2,000 conversations, 10 team members and email and social channels in one inbox. There are no per-agent or per-resolution fees.
Yes. Many teams keep Zendesk for email tickets and phone and put InChat on the website. InChat trains on your Zendesk help center articles, answers chat with AI and hands complex conversations to your team, so you can drop chat-only seats and resolution fees without migrating ticket history.
Most teams switch in an afternoon. Paste your help center URL, test the agent on your most common chat questions, set handoff rules, then replace the Web Widget snippet with one InChat script tag. Your Zendesk account and ticket history stay untouched.
